We’re going to take a look at the thumb area and what players made the best in their debut outings.
SC4 Invitational
Brown City had a good outing on Friday in the St. Claire County Community College hosted tournament. Going 2-2-1 on the day, the losses came down to the wire against tough opponents in Mt. Morris and Otsego. They pushed Mt. Morris into overtime during their pool play match losing 23-25 and 26-28. Meanwhile losing to Otsego in bracket play by no more than 6 points between the two sets. As expected Jr OH Grace Schlaud impressed offensively posting 35 kills and 6 aces. Making her varsity debut was Soph OH Makayla Cournaya. Cournaya had 27 kills on a .333 hitting percentage to go with 22 digs. Defensively, Lauren Woods passed lights out popping up 51 digs.
Swan Valley Invitational
Caro had a rough debut at the Swan Valley Tournament. In pool play, Caro got pushed around by tough teams. Dropping games to Kingsley and Beal City then split with Saginaw Nouvel. As a 10th seed relegated to the consolation bracket, they would win their two games on the day. They went to three sets with both Lakers in the semis and Nouvel in the championship. Lakers being a marathon match as Caro dropped set 2, 32-34! Playing in every set, Ellie Hornbacher was the lone star for the Tigers. While posting 36 kills, more impressively she brought up 78 attacks and was a stalwart in serve receive passing at a 90% rate.
USA Invite
In a small 5 team field, Unionville-Sebewaing brought in good comp to get their season started. Going 1-1-3, USA was tossed around throughout the day. Maci Montgomery led the defense with 61 digs and a 86% reception rate. On offense, the Patriots were led by Sr OH Allyson Kemp with 30 kills on a .224 clip. Offensively, USA struggled, hitting .185 as a team. Something that will surely be cleaned up as the season progresses.
BWAC Conference Cup
In a new era, North Branch came to play with a totally new team. Graduating his entire starting lineup, Jim Fish still managed to go 5-0 on the day. With a much more balanced attack that saw three hitters averaging around 2.5 kills per set. Leading her team was Jr MB Hannah Farnsworth. Farnsworth notched 25 kills to the tune of .449! Also bringing in 25 kills was Jr OH Brianne June who also brought in 15 aces at a 93% serving rate.
