Newark under head coach Tonya Grayson, led the team to a 40-2 season and their first ever state title. State runner-up HartEm High School could be a contender, but don’t count out St. Theresa. They return class of 2020 outside hitter Abby Robinson (
Illini Elite
VBC) to the starting lineup.
2A
Pleasant Plains walked away with a state title in a two-set victory over Galena in 2018-19. Class of 2020 MacKenzie Houser, a 5’7 libero from Pleasant Plains (
Illini Elite
VBC -Southern Illinois committed) returns to the team, giving them a shot for the title. Look for 6’3” middle blocker Allie Trame from St. Thomas More (2020 –
Illini Elite
VBC – Alabama commitment) to get back to the state final four, where they fell to Pleasant Plains in three sets in the 2018-2019 state semifinals.

Sterling and Althoff Catholic met in the finals with Sterling finishing on top by the score of 25-21, 25-22. Sterling juniors Brooklyn Borum (6’0, OH, Sports Performance VBC) and Breelyn Borum (6’0, S, Sports Performance VBC) will be trouble for opponents as they look for their second straight State championship. Look for Althoff Catholic’s senior Karinna Gall (6’1, MB/OH, Rockwood Thunder VBC, Indiana State) and junior Katie Wemhoener (5’8, L, Missouri State) to improve the team’s chances and vie for a title.
4A
Four times in the past six years, the state title went to either Marist High School or Mother Mc Auley. Marist looks for their third state title in a row under head coach Jordan Vidovich. Mairead Boyle a 5’6 libero (2020, Michio VBC, Western Michigan), Senior Avery Jedry OH/RS (Michio VBC) and junior setter Mollly Mather (1st Alliance VBC) anchor the team who tallied 80 wins and only 4 losses in the past two seasons. Mother Mc Auley is always in the title hunt, but Downers Grove North wants to return to the final and will rely on Maddi Cuchran 5’5 Libero (1st Alliance VBC) to help them get there.
