For the Sophomores who had the experience playing their Freshman year, the time comes where they can thrive. These Sophomores from the Class of 2022 are among some of the top when it comes to kill leaders in the state and are making a huge impact for their team.
Chloe Largent – ACGC
Largent is among the top athletes in Western Iowa. Over six feet tall, long, and very strong, Largent is able to attack and put the ball to the floor from the pin or the outside. In this short season so far, Largent is averaging over six kills per set and is hitting over .400. Those are video game like numbers. So far ACGC is 6-0 and will be a force to contend with in their conference and regional.
Hayden Kubik – West Des Moines Valley
No surprise that Kubik is among some of the top kill leaders for any class. Kubik is solid all-around where she can pass, block, and terminate from any spot on the court. Whether its a split down the middle of the block, high hands or swinging to hit any angle thats open. Valley will contend in Class 5A in a loaded Central Iowa region which they will hope to make their way back to Cedar Rapids where they will return a lot of athletes who have played in big matches.
Allison Bonnette – Denver
Welcome to the new team to be reckon with in the Cedar Valley. Denver is off to a solid start to the season sitting at 8-4 which includes two wins over preseason number one, Tripoli. With a lineup full of underclassmen, Bonnette has been one of the top attackers for the Cyclones. With over 100 kills, over four per set, and hitting over .300 she has become the go-to hitter for this team who has two Juniors and the rest Freshmen and Sophomores.
Avery Beckett – Waverly-Shell Rock
Beckett is rising among the Class of 2022 as a long, athletic attacker who can score from anywhere. The Go-Hawks are one of the top teams to compete with in Eastern Iowa and with Beckett emerging, they have definitely added to the their list of attackers. Beckett is already over 100 kills and is hitting .275, while also having 20 total blocks for a team that is sitting at 16-0.
Faith DeRonde – Oskaloosa
DeRonde is definitely a top all around athlete on the rise in Southern Iowa. Already a state track qualifier in the discus, DeRonde is a six rotation outside who can do a little bit of everything. The lone Sophomore on a Senior dominated team, DeRonde averages nearly four kills per set and should surpass 100 on the season by the end of the week.
Bailey Van Voorst – Pella
Pella was supposed to be in a bit of a rebuilding year graduating some key Seniors, including Emily Holterhaus who led them to multiple state tournaments and is now playing at UNI. Van Voorst is leading Pella with just over 2.5 kills per set. All of Pella’s top attackers are Sophomores or Juniors.
Macy Daufeldt – West Liberty
Daufeldt is no stranger to finding ways to score points from anywhere on the court. The Drake commit already is averaging over 4.5 kills per set and has been a key part of the hot start by the Comets. They will have a top-five matchup against conference rival Tipton on September 19.
Calia Clubb – Clear Creek-Amana
Clubb can terminate from either pin. She has found success in volleyball and basketball in her short career, but this volleyball season she is averaging nearly four kills per set. The combination of Clubb, and Junior middle blocker, Hailey Pollack make for quite the 1-2 punch for the Clippers.
