Continue ReadingHaving a right side who can block and score points is an added bonus at the high school level. All eyes are on the outside hitter where they can just blast away and are always available in a scramble situation. The middles are running the tempos and working pin to pin to block, but what about the right side? Sometimes their duty is just to make sure and block, be a presence, and if you get set – just don’t error (depending on the system). But teams with really strong right sides have such an added bonus. Here are some top right sides I’ve seen so far this season.

Ava Moes – Lakeville South (MN)
Committed to Tennessee
Moes just recently committed to Tennessee and the Vols have just scored one of the top players in Minnesota as well as the region. Athleticism, physicality, and power – Moes can serve receive, play backrow, and is a major mismatch on the right side. This past club season she has played in the middle for Northern Lights, but for Lakeville South she’s on the right side. In 2018, Moes was a breakout player as a Sophomore being a major part of the Lakeville South state run. Her momentum continues through her Junior year and will again look to lead South back to the state tournament in a really rigorous sectional.
Elizabeth Helmich – Wayzata (MN)
Committed to James Madison
Helmich is something special to watch. Long, athletic, and a snap of a left handed swing. Helmich connects extremely well with setter, Olivia Johnson, in which they have played club together at MN Select and Wayzata High School. Helmich is one of the top overall players in the Class of 2020 in Minnesota and will be heading to James Madison, a strong Division 1 program in Harrisonburg, VA. Her pace on the ball, as well as the ability to hit different angles is what allows her to score a lot of points on the right side.
Hannah Derenne – Luxemburg-Casco (WI)
Derenne is out of the Class of 2021 and is one of Wisconsin’s best kept secrets, but is definitely someone who needs to be on the radar for college coaches. At 6’0, long, and a high contact point, Derenne is such a mismatch where she can score points down the line, through the split or a sharp cross, but she is also a threat out of right-back as well. Her overall athleticism and continued training will be something to keep tabs on throughout the high school and club season.

Logan Sherman – Marshall (MN)
The versatility of Logan Sherman is what puts her among some of the top players on the right side. Setting in the backrow and hitting on the right side in the front row, she is one who can do it all. She was a key part to the state runner up finish for Marshall last season and the Tigers are on a mission to get back in 2019. They are currently ranked fourth in the state.
Elise Schneider – Arrowhead (WI)
Committed To Wofford
Schneider is much like Moes with her power and overall athleticism for Arrowhead, which is one of the top teams in Wisconsin this year. A Wofford commit, Schneider has seen time in the middle and the right side. With her lateral quickness and strength at the net as a blocker and attacker, her versatility will be an added bonus at the next level.
