(4) West County (17-6) vs. (5) St. Vincent (6-14-5)
(3) Jefferson (Festus) (22-9) vs. (6) Kingston (2-21)
(2) Arcadia Valley (19-8-1) vs. Jefferson/Kingston Winner
(1) Valle Catholic (20-5-1) vs. West County/St. Vincent Winner
Who will advance: Valle Catholic
Dark Horse: Jefferson (Festus)
You honestly could have flipped a coin here. I didn’t place Arcadia Valley as a dark horse in this instance since they could very easily win it all. It’s hard to pick against a state-runner up in a scenario where the team will likely get to a district final. Valle Catholic has not lost a match since October 5. Jefferson should not be a dark horse, either. Arcadia Valley will have to avenge its loss to Valle Catholic and its balanced offensive attack to move on to Sectionals. Valle Catholic senior setter Rachel Loida averages 7.9 assists per set, has 159 digs and 59 aces on the year.
Class 2, District 4 – St. Louis, MO
(4) Grandview (Hillsboro) (10-7-3) vs. (5) Carnahan (6-5-1)
(2) Hancock (9-10-3) vs. (7) Valley Park (1-20-1)
(3) Gateway Science Center (10-11-2) vs. (6) McKinley Classical Leadership (3-7)
(1) St. Pius (Festus) (17-4-3) vs. Grandview/Carnahan winner
Who will advance: St. Pius
Dark Horse: Grandview
St. Pius will likely emerge from this district if it can get past Grandview. It will do so behind sophomore phenom Kennedy Lane and senior Caly Otec, who are both having a fantastic season on the outside.
Class 2, District 5 – St. Louis, MO
(4) Brentwood (7-14-1) vs. (5) Principia (4-15-1)
(2) Crossroads College Prep (19-6-1) vs. (7) Sumner (2-16-1)
(3) Metro (22-5) vs. (6) Collegiate School of Med-Bio Science (12-8-2)
(1) Maplewood-Richmond Heights (20-2) vs. Brentwood/Principia winner
Who will advance: Maplewood-Richmond Heights
Dark Horse: Metro
Class 2, District 6 – St. Louis, MO
(4) Lutheran North (7-16-2) vs. (5) Bowling Green (4-17)
(3) STEAM Academy (14-3) vs. (6) North Technical (5-12)
(2) Whitfield (11-12-1) vs. STEAM Academy/North Technical Winner
(1) Christian (22-8-1) vs. Lutheran North/Bowling Green Winner
Who will advance: Lutheran North
Dark Horse: Whitfield
Class 2, District 7 – Montgomery City, MO
(4) New Haven (7-17-1) vs. (5) Father Tolton Regional Catholic (3-19)
(3) Montgomery City (10-13) vs. (6) North Callaway (2-14)
(2) Hallsville (14-5-2) vs. Montgomery City/North Callaway Winner
(1) Hermann (26-5) vs. New Haven/Father Tolton Catholic Winner
Who will advance: Hermann
Dark Horse: Hallsville
The two-seed a dark horse? Yes. Hermann is the defending state champs and have not missed a beat since last season. Hallsville has put together a wonderful 2019, but the Bearcats have too many weapons on offense behind junior middle blocker Grace Winklemann and junior setter Hannah Grosse. Oh, and have beaten the likes of St. Francis Borgia, Jefferson City and Fatima along the way.
Class 2, District 8 – Belle, MO
(4) Cuba (2-11-3) vs. (5) Belle (10-13)
(2) Steelville (13-7-1) vs. (7) Dixon (0-19-1)
(3) Linn (6-19-1) vs. (6) Bourbon (4-17-3)
(1) Fatima (14-5-4) vs. Cuba/Belle winner
Who will advance: Fatima
Dark Horse: Steelville
Class 2, District 9 – Licking, MO
(4) Conway (12-11-4) vs. (5) Houston (8-12-2)
(3) Liberty (Mountain View) (19-9-1) vs. (6) Thayer (2-10-1)
(2) Cabool (28-4-2) vs. Liberty (Mountain View)/Thayer Winner
(1) Licking (24-8) vs. Conway/Houston Winner
Who will advance: Cabool
Dark Horse: Liberty (Mountain View)
This is another tough district. The three top seeds have all posted victories against one another in 2019. Liberty (Mountain View) emerged from this district last season and had a great showing at the state tournament. Will that experience get the Eagles past Cabool? Licking is having a great season in its own right. It will be exciting volleyball – that is certain.
Class 2, District 10 – Strafford, MO
(4) Forsyth (18-10-2) vs. (5) New Covenant Academy (15-12-1)
(2) Fair Grove (17-12) vs. (7) Sparta (11-15)
(3) Clever (17-8-4) vs. (6) Spokane (13-13-2)
(1) Strafford (26-3) vs. Forsyth/New Covenant Academy Winner
Who will advance: Strafford
Dark Horse: Clever
Class 2, District 11 – Pierce City, MO
(4) Sarcoxie (10-19) vs. (5) Marionville (5-19-2)
(2) Pierce City (19-11-1) vs. (7) Southwest (Washburn) (4-24)
(3) Diamond (14-12-2) vs. (6) East Newton (4-22)
(1) College Heights Christian (27-1-1) vs. Sacroxie/Marionville Winner
Who will advance: Pierce City
Dark Horse: Sarcoxie
Class 2, District 13 – Stover, MO
(4) Knob Noster (7-18-1) vs. (5) Versailles (4-21-3)
(2) Stover (17-10) vs. (7) Warsaw (2-24)
(3) Tipton (13-9-3) vs. (6) Windsor (5-20-1)
(1) Cole Camp (20-9-2) vs. Knob Noster/Versailles Winner
Who will advance: Cole Camp
Dark Horse: Tipton
Lyle – Courtesy Summit ChristianClass 2, District 14 – Lone Jack, MO
(4) Lone Jack (7-10-2) vs. (5) University Academy Charter (15-11-2)
(2) Summit Christian (16-6-3) vs. (7) Frontier School of Excellence Charter (0-3)
(3) Barstow (6-14-1) vs. (6) Sherwood (6-17-2)
(1) Holden (18-12) vs. Lone Jack/University Academy Charter Winner
Who will advance: Summit Christian
Dark Horse: Lone Jack
Summit Christian is on an impressive winning streak in which they have knocked off Lutheran (Kansas City) and Oak Grove. The Eagles have not lost a match in nearly a month. The Eagles are led in kills by senior Kate Lyle, who has 144 on the year. The right side is second on the team in digs with 115, as well.
Class 2, District 15 – Richmond, MO
(4) Lafayette County (11-14-2) vs. (5) Carrollton (4-18-2)
(2) St. Paul Lutheran (4-14-2) vs. (7) Brookfield (0-22-2)
(3) Lexington (10-19) vs. (6) Richmond (2-23-1)
(1) Lawson (23-5-4) vs. Lafayette County/Carrollton Winner
Who will advance: Lawson
Dark Horse: St. Paul Lutheran
Class 2, District 16 – Lathrop, MO
(4) Trenton (10-15-1) vs. (5) Penney (5-21)
(2) East Buchanan (20-11) vs. (7) South Harrison (4-16)
(3) Lathrop (10-14-1) vs. (6) Plattsburg (4-17-1)
(1) Mid-Buchanan (20-12) vs. Trenton/Penney Winner
Who will advance: Mid-Buchanan
Dark Horse: East Buchanan
Again, I have placed a two-seed in the dark horse spot. It’s simply because East Buchanan has defeated Mid-Buchanan once this season. If the Bulldogs can reach the district finals, things could get interesting.
