New Rules:
June 15th– after student athletes sophomore year coaches can communicate through phone, emails, text etc directly to the student. They can also send recruiting materials.
August 1st — before Junior year student athletes can now take official visits. Unofficial visits are allowed after June 15th, but now they can go ahead and meet with coaches and athletic staff. Coaches can also have off-campus contact with potential recruits.
Skylar McCune (Gretna HS and Premier Volleyball) was one such student caught in the new recruiting rules.
I was where probably most girls were at, creating close relationships and connections with a few schools through several phone calls and emails. I was definitely closer with some schools more than others. The fall before the rule change, I went on an unofficial visit to BYU. This past summer I went and tried out their camp–I it was super great! I have also attended some camps at Creighton which have been SO awesome as well. I also had the opportunity to attend the dream team camp at Nebraska this summer, and have also gone to USC for camp.
How did the changes that were made affect your recruiting process you had started?
The rule change definitely affected my recruiting process pretty hard I feel. I felt I had worked really hard to make these good connections with some schools I was really interested in, then just one day it was no communication of any sort. If I wanted to talk to a coach it was strictly at camp, only which is tough because camp is only in summer.
Do you agree with the rule changes?
At first no. I was frustrated that I had put in so much effort to create relationships with some schools, and then communication had to come to a complete stop. I think the 2022 class was most affected since we were in the middle of recruiting, and then had to stop. Now my opinion has changed, and I think it’s for the better that committing is not allowed until summer going into junior year. Even thinking about committing is stressful because it’s obviously a huge choice to make at a young age. I think the rule change gives both us athletes and coaches more time!
What are you looking for in a school academically? What will draw you to a school the most? What is your major if known?
What draws me to a school the most is 100% the culture of the team. I think every team has their own unique personality so I’m just looking for a school that matches mine! I’m not certain of what I’d like to major in, but Im thinking something along the lines of health and nutrition or exercise science.
What are you looking for in a volleyball program and coach?
In a coach im looking for someone who will push me to my limits on the court, but also someone I feel like I could have a good connection with off the court as well! Personal connections are most important to me.
I’m looking at a school close by in Nebraska. The thought of having my family be able to come to all my games makes me really excited. Its a beautiful campus with such an amazing program. There are a few others out-of-state schools that I have looked at and connected with, but the thought of staying close to home excites me more and more as time goes on.
