The Central Iowa powers to the Cedar Valley to Iowa City and Quad Cities, these athletes have been competing with and against each other their whole club careers. Some will even go on to play on the same team in college while others will still be opponents at the next level. With clubs changing every year, here are a few athletes to take a look at heading into Sunday’s 18s field at Six Pack in Cedar Falls.
Kate Nelson – Waukee – IPVA
Committed to South Dakota State
Nelson was a key member of Central Iowa Select in 2019 and will join IPVA who finished in the top three at Nationals last season. A long, athletic outside who can find a way to score points will be joining a really athletic and physical team with the likes of Allena Shimon, a setter committed to St. Cloud State and two Drake commits in Kacie Rewerts and Kara Peter. This 18s group overall is really deep with plenty of teams who will be in contention for bids in 2020.
Abby Brunssen – Benton – Iowa Rockets 18R
Committed to Northwest Missouri State
The outside hitter out of Benton reached over 1,000 kills in her career and will bring quite the arm swing to score points for this Rockets squad. This team is comprised of future D2 talent in Erica Brohm (Purdue Northwest), Emily Kono (Upper Iowa), and Peyton Kriegel (Sioux Falls). Iowa has become a D2 recruiting battleground with plenty of out of state schools as well as Iowa’s only D2 school in Upper Iowa picking up some top talent.
Emma Powell – North Scott – Iowa Select 18 Mizuno
Powell is still uncommitted as to where she will head next year for college – she would be a really big pick up at the next level with her overall athleticism and ability to score points. She was an important part of the North Scott team that qualified for the Class 4A state tournament. A six rotation outside who will team up with a really dynamic group on her Iowa Select 18 Mizuno squad for 2020.
Jorie Randall – Mount Vernon – Adrenaline 18 Austin
RandallRandall is coming off a state title at Mount Vernon and will be joined by other Class of 2021 athletes from her high school team in Lauren Schrock and Natalie Welch. Randall brings athleticism to the libero position where she can serve receive, anticipate, and knows how to play big in a key moment. She will hold down the backrow along with Iowa commit, Sydney Dennis. This squad is really long and athletic with some of the best players in the Cedar Rapids area and will be coached by Xavier Head Coach, Austin Filer.
Abbey Griffin – Albia – Club Ignit Select 18 Blue
Griffin is another who would be a really big pick up at the next level. A really strong all-around athlete who could probably see time at the next level in volleyball or softball. An All-State outside hitter, Griffin lead her team to the regional final this past season. She brings a thunderous swing and all the intangibles needed at the next level.
