Each of the state’s high school classes includes numerous productive liberos, some of whom are thriving in the current club campaign.
Here are 10 17 and under liberos to watch.
Eleanor Beavin: A 5-6 junior libero, Beavin is a student-athlete from 2019 high school runner-up Mercy Academy in Louisville. During the 2019 high school season, Beavin, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, recorded over 700 digs as a high school junior and was named the state’s top defensive player. Beavin is competing for Union Asics 17-1.
Olivia Bennett: A 5-5 sophomore libero, Bennett is a student-athlete from Bryan Station High School in Lexington. Among the top players at her position in the Class of 2022, Bennett is competing for Lexington United 16 Adidas.
Caroline Cole: A 5-6 junior libero, Cole is a student-athlete from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington. Among the best defensive players in the state, Cole has committed to Kennesaw State University. Cole is competing for Lexington United 17 Adidas.
Katelyn Grimes: A 5-6 junior libero/defensive specialist, Grimes is a student-athlete from Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy in neighboring Ohio. A productive player who logged 420 digs during the 2019 high school season, Grimes has committed to the University of Central Florida and is competing for NKYVC 17-1 Tsunami.
Lucy Malone: A 5-4 junior defensive specialist/libero, Malone is a student-athlete from Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville. A consistent contributor for Sacred Heart Academy, Malone played in each set of her prep team’s 2019 season. Malone is competing for Union Asics 17-1, accompanying Beavin on the same club team roster.
Abby Schaefer: A 5-8 sophomore libero/defensive specialist, Schaefer is a student-athlete from St. Henry High School in Erlanger. Helping to lead her high school team during the 2019 prep season, Schaefer recorded 498 digs. One of the top Northern Kentucky high school volleyball players regardless of which, Schaefer is competing for NKYVC 16-1 Tsunami.
