In the Class of 2022, a handful of players have played their way into the starting lineup at setter for their respective prep teams, and have carried that into a successful club season in 2020.
Here’s five 2022 setters that have made a name for themselves.
Anna Leigh Alford Anna Leigh Alford 5'9" | S Mt. Pleasant | 2022 MI , Mount Pleasant/FaR Out
Alford has been making a name for herself since stepping into Mount Pleasant High School. Alford started at setter right away as a freshman and put up over 1,150 assists in 2018. This past fall, she had another 1,000-plus assist season while guiding the Oilers to the Division 1 quarterfinals. Alford also has a great defensive game, as she has been one of the team leaders in digs the last two years. Add in a solid serve that has registered 180 aces in her first two prep seasons, and she has all three phases of the game covered. Alford strives to be the best and makes a lengthy trip to be part of FaR Out 16 Black, which is only making her more well-rounded.
Kendyl Andrews Kendyl Andrews 5'8" | S Flushing | 2022 State MI , Flushing/Michigan Elite
Andrews is one of the many young players on the Flushing roster this past fall and now she competes for Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno. Andrews has the ability to move to the libero position as well, making her a vital piece to any roster. She can pass, serve and set with the best of the Class of 2022. Andrews helped Flushing reach the Division 1 regional finals and a Flint Metro League Stripes Division co-title. With her growing leadership, Andrews will have Flushing as a contender again in 2020.
Karlee Stoll Karlee Stoll 5'7" | S Anchor Bay | 2022 State MI , Anchor Bay/Legacy
Stoll has really displayed a high motor over the shortened club season and been a leader for Legacy 16-1 Adidas. The Anchor Bay sophomore has been the emotional leader for the team on the floor this club season and has shown a lot of improved defensive play through her effort and competitiveness. Stoll is making big strides and continues to take the needed steps forward to be a top setter in the class.
Julia Mills Julia Mills 5'10" | S Airport | 2022 State MI , Carleton Airport/Team Detroit
Mills has been put in a position to excel, as she is the starting setter for Carleton Airport, a team that had a strong season in Division 2 in 2019. Now she competes for Team Detroit 17 Red, playing up in age. Mills is getting a great opportunity to push herself to new heights by facing stronger opponents and feeding faster hitters. This past year should really lead to a big next 12 months for Mills.
Renee Brines Renee Brines 5'9" | S Cadillac | 2022 State MI , Cadillac/FaR Out
Brines had a big 2019 season for Cadillac, racking up over 1,300 assists. She has amassed over 2,100 assists in her prep career already. Her defensive skills are also promising. Brines had over 500 digs in the 2019 season for the Vikings. Cadillac was a Division 2 contender, reaching the regional final before falling in five sets to Kingsley. A multi-sport athlete, Brines has been playing for FaR Out 18 Regional Red this club season, where she gets to compete against some older competition and strengthen her leadership skills.
