The upper portions of the state have been making strides in volleyball development like the rest of the state, and we have seen a lot of promise from their top talent over the last 12 months. Here’s some Class of 2021-23 players that have made a name for themselves in Northern Michigan.
Macy Brown Macy Brown 5'10" | OH Cadillac | 2021 State MI , OH Cadillac/FaR Out (2021)
Brown had a dominant 2019 prep season, recording over 800 kills while hitting nearly .350 for the Vikings. Brown was a First Team All-State selection in Division 2 and helped Cadillac reach the regional finals. She played up in age at FaR Out during the club season and is likely to be one of the most impactful hitters during the 2020 prep season.
Mia Osorio, L/DS Leland (2021)
Osorio has been the reliable presence in the back row for the Division 4 power and has earned All-State honors in 2018 and 2019. Osorio has great footwork and vision to keep her team in-system. The Class of 2021 defender is sure to have a veteran Leland squad ready to make another run at the state championship in 2020.
Sara Beelen, OH Rudyard (2021)
A standout in the Upper Peninsula, Beelen helped the Bulldogs reach the Division 4 state semifinals in 2019. Her all-around ability made her a threat anywhere on the floor. Beelen had a powerful serve with over 115 aces, while also displaying consistent passing and defense with over 550 digs. At the net, Beelen had over 250 kills and has been improving her finishing ability.
Sidny Hessem, OH Kingsley (2021)
Hessem made her presence well known in 2019, posting up over 470 kills and 600 digs for the Stags. Hessem was an All-Region selection and displayed a powerful attack at the net that should make her a contender for one of the top finishers in Northern Michigan this year.
Emma Turnquist Emma Turnquist 6'1" | MB Traverse City Central | 2021 State MI , OH/RS Traverse City Central/Northshore (2021)
Turnquist is a dynamic player that can move to different positions around the net, but also has the skills to be a great all-around player. Already with finishing ability at the net, Turnquist also has a devastating serve, a solid block, and an improving passing game. Turnquist is set for a big 2020 prep season as she becomes the go-to option for the Trojans.
Tatum Kareck, OH Leland (2021)
Kareck was a go-to arm for Leland in 2019, as the six-rotation option had over 350 kills and 350 digs. She also approached 100 aces for the Comets. With just one senior on the 2019 roster, Kareck showed a lot of leadership qualities that should carry over into a senior-heavy 2020 for Leland.
Hannah Sidorowicz, S TC St. Francis/Northshore (2021)
A battle-tested setter, Sidorowicz has ran the St. Francis offense smoothly and guided the Gladiators to Battle Creek in 2018 and a D3 quarterfinal appearance in 2019. She continues to fine-tune her game with Northshore Volleyball in hopes of helping St. Francis make another deep run in 2020.
Kaylin PooleKaylin Poole, OH TC St. Francis/Northshore (2021)
Like Sidorowicz, Poole is also a player that has been in a number of high-pressure matches the last couple of years. This past fall she stepped up as a go-to hitter for the Gladiators while taking big steps forward with her all-around play. Look for more of the same in 2020 as a veteran leader.
Emma Mirabelli Emma Mirabelli 6'0" | OH TC Christian | 2022 State MI , OH/OPP Traverse City Christian/FaR Out (2022)
Mirabelli has established herself as a top player in the Class of 2022 thanks to a standout season with TC Christian last fall alongside her play with FaR Out 16 Black. Mirabelli has the poise to become a dominant six-rotation player and will have the Sabres as another Division 4 contender this fall.
Seiler Hruska Seiler Hruska 6'1" | OH Marquette | 2022 State MI , OH Marquette/Sports Performance (2022)
Hruska is a great story. Marquette is certainly pretty far north in the state of Michigan, so getting a lot of big-match opportunities can be tough to come by. However, Hruska is pushing herself by playing club ball in the Chicago area. Her dedication and effort to be the best she can has skyrocketed her up our 2022 rankings board.
Renee Brines Renee Brines 5'9" | S Cadillac | 2022 State MI , S Cadillac/FaR Out (2022)
Brines has shown in a short time that she is more than your average setter. Her 2019 stat line for Cadillac displayed all-around ability. While putting up over 1,300 assists, Brines also had over 500 digs and 170 kills. Brines also is showing improvement with her blocking and serve. Those skills are being tapped into further with FaR Out, so expect Brines to become a top setter in the Class of 2022.
Honorable Mention: Olivia Lowe, OH Leland (2021); Tara Madej, MH Johannesburg-Lewiston (2021); Sarah Elwell, MH Leland (2021); Breya Domke, OH Onaway (2021); Taylor Kedsch, OH Carney-Nadeau (2021); Sarah Auger Sarah Auger 5'11" | MB Traverse City Central | 2022 MI , MH TC Central (2022); Kiley Ridenour, OH TC Central (2023).
