Here are six 12th Region defensive specialists on the rise.
Catie Grace Hampton: A contributor as a freshman for West Jessamine during its 12th Region title run in 2019, Hampton posted 32 digs over 19 matches. A defensive specialist/libero, Hampton is poised to deliver in a breakout season. Hampton excels when receiving opponents’ serves and sets efficiently.
Isabella Joseph: Making an impact for Danville during her sophomore season in 2019, Joseph logged 243 digs and 81 service aces. Joseph played in 33 of Danville’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season. One of the 12th Region’s most underrated young volleyball players, Joseph digs and pursues well and hits consistently from the back row.
Desiree Palmer: A defensive specialist/setter, Palmer appeared in 27 of Boyle County’s 29 matches as a sophomore in 2019. One of the most productive players for the Rebels, Palmer recorded 111 digs and 161 assists. A versatile performer and vocal leader who provided leadership in her previous season, Palmer is a precise passer who excels away from the net.
Addy Rice: Appearing in 28 of Wayne County’s 36 matches as freshman a in 2019, Rice, a defensive specialist/opposite, posted 80 digs and 25 kills. Set to compete as a sophomore, Rice will have additional responsibilities. Rice, who has delivered as a tenacious hitter from the right side, is communicative and displays athleticism.
Katie Shaw: Poised to compete for Southwestern as a junior, Shaw is fresh off a successful sophomore campaign. Shaw contributed for Southwestern throughout the 2019 high school volleyball season, registering 136 digs in the Warriors’ 39 matches. An experienced defensive specialist, Shaw has produced from various parts of the court and shown the ability to make challenging digs regularly.
Bailey Whitaker: Preparing to take the floor in her junior season, Whitaker made an impact as a sophomore for Somerset during the 2019 prep volleyball season. Whitaker recorded 77 digs in 82 sets as a sophomore and is expected to make a much larger impact for the Briar Jumpers during her junior campaign. Quick, Whitaker is an underrated server who has also exhibited solid ball control.
