On the right side of the bracket, we have C2 (or will it be C1?) Grand Island Central Catholic matched up against C1 (or will it be C2?) Lincoln Lutheran. AND WOW! Both teams are returning state champs. Both teams graduated some great leaders in 2019, but their youth is stepping into those roles seamlessly!
Let’s look at a completely hypothetical matchup between the two teams. This is by no means the rotation/players that will be on the court this fall. GICC Coach Zavala and Lutheran Coach Ziegler have the final say and experience to determine the strategy for their teams.
Setters – GICC graduates their all-state setter, but, in return, inherits her younger sister 6’0 freshman Carolyn Maser. They may also look to 5’4 junior Jenna Heidelk in a 6-2 rotation. Lutheran will replace one setter in their usual 6-2 offense. 5’10 junior Ashlyn DeBoer Ashlyn DeBoer 5'10" | S Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (HUDL Highlights) returns with the other side open and has challengers.
Middles – A great matchup at the net between GICC’s 6’1 Chloe Cloud Chloe Cloud 6'2" | MB Grand Island Central Catholic | 2022 State NE (2022) and LL’s 5’10 Abi Wohlgemuth (2021)! It’s LL’s 6′ Molli Martin Molli Martin 5'11" | MB Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (2022) year to shine in the other middle spot. GICC’s M2 position is open at this time. Maybe a good place for 6’0 Carolyn Maser to spend the other half of her court time when not setting or maybe GICC has someone else waiting in the wings to fill this spot?!?!
Outsides – This is where it gets very interesting in comparing the teams! On the Lutheran side, we have 5’9 Addi Ernstmeyer ( 2021) and 5’10 Abby Wachal Abby Wachal 5'10" | OH Lincoln Lutheran | 2023 State NE (2023). GICC returns 5’11 Gracie Woods Gracie Woods 6'0" | OH Grand Island CC | 2023 State NE (2023, HUDL Highlights) with the other spot open. A LOT OF YOUTH waiting to fill that second OH spot! Maybe a spot for extremely athletic 5’9 Evan Glade Evan Glade 5'11" | OH Millard West | 2023 State NE (2023, HUDL Highlights)?
Opposites – This position is truly very important when running a 6-2 offense! With three front-row hitters at all times, a swing from the right can be pivotal. Both teams are very even at this position and if someone steps it up, it could mean a run on points for the win.
Libero/DS – Both players are small and MIGHTY! LL’s 5’4 Raegan Holle Raegan Holle 5'5" | DS/L Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (2022, HUDL Highlights) returns as a DS and ready to wear the coveted libero jersey this fall. GICC’s 5’3 Hailey Ache (2021) looks to be the backbone of the young Crusader team and will field the majority of the serves and be in the right place at the right rime for defense.
Scouting report from the players:
GRAND ISLAND CENTRAL CATHOLIC PLAYERS
⇒Jenna Heidelk (2022) – See what they do best and how they do their own things
⇒ Gracie Woods Gracie Woods 6'0" | OH Grand Island CC | 2023 State NE (2023) – Personally, I watch hudl film on the team or player and I look at the player’s tendencies, attitude, and what she struggles with or what she is good at.
⇒ Evan Glade Evan Glade 5'11" | OH Millard West | 2023 State NE (2023) – With social media, I keep up with most teams that we play. You kind of get a good idea of players to watch for. Through club I have met a lot of the girls that we play against as well. Then usually before varsity games, I watch film to see what we’re up against.
LINCOLN LUTHERAN PLAYERS
⇒ Raegan Holle Raegan Holle 5'5" | DS/L Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (2022) – To scout another team/player our team spends some time together during the season watching film. We go through some statistics on the other team and talk on some of their major strengths and weaknesses (as well as how we are going to play). Personally, I also spend some time on my own watching film on another team to understand their style of play better!
⇒Addi Ernstmeyer (2021) – We are blessed to have one of our coaches create scouting reports for us so we can take notes on the team while we watch film together. Most of us watch our future opponents film on Hudl in our own free time.
⇒ Abby Wachal Abby Wachal 5'10" | OH Lincoln Lutheran | 2023 State NE 2023) – We watch lots of film and take lots of notes. Also if we are in a tournament we will watch a couple of teams before we play to get a sense of how they are that day and what their tendencies are.
⇒Abi Wohlgemuth (2021) – Watch HUDL videos and watch different players’ tendencies and what they do on the court. Also look at the stats for the team, who is the leading scorer, blocker, passer, and server.
⇒Mara Otte (2021, HUDL Highlights) – Watch for their tendencies, look for a weak spot in their passing, how often the setter dumps, and their serving
⇒ Molli Martin Molli Martin 5'11" | MB Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (2022) – We watch film and watch them if I see them at a tournament. Try to pick out key players and where to hit.
⇒ Ashlyn DeBoer Ashlyn DeBoer 5'10" | S Lincoln Lutheran | 2022 State NE (2022) – We typically look at hudl and will be given different assignments to scout the team or teams before a game or tournament. We are always given papers with different sections we fill out when we scout as a team. Such as team goals, individual goals, a theme for our next game, and different things to take note of as we watch the other team.
