Emma Halter Emma Halter 5'5" | DS/L Roncalli | 2022 State #60 Nation IN , 5-5, Roncalli, Team Indiana, Prep Dig #7
This second team all-state honoree for Class 4A is, far and away, the best DS option in the class of ’22 in Indiana. She’s been the Rebels’ libero since her freshman year, and she clearly leads with that special jersey on. Her contacts seem to always be on target, and if she’s forced to take the second ball, she not only sets hittable balls, but ones that her hitters can terminate. Although the gap is only four positions between her and the next DS on this list, the gap is much wider.
Emma McMahon Emma McMahon 5'5" | DS/L Bellmont | 2022 State IN , 5-5, Bellmont, Munciana, Prep Dig #11
Emma can play multiple positions in the back row, but her strength is clearly playing middle back and getting any hard-driven ball hit into a split block and chasing down any tool attempt by a pin player. Her quick-but-smooth approach to serve receive has served (sorry) her well, and this coming fall should see a resurgence on Bellmont in the state tournament.
Rory Powers Rory Powers 5'6" | DS/L Yorktown | 2022 State IN , 5-6, Yorktown, Munciana, Prep Dig #16
Taryn Sallee Taryn Sallee 5'5" | DS/L Yorktown | 2022 State IN , 5-5, Yorktown, Munciana, Prep Dig #21
Good news/bad news situation with these two. The good news? Exceptional ball control, and their radii to defend and receive serve often gives them the ability to cover up other players’ weaknesses. Bad news? Only one of them can wear the libero jersey in the fall. The two, however, are prototypical passers from Munciana; great serve receive, fast feet, perfect platform, and the ability to run the back row. You can’t go wrong with either of these two.
Cadence Notter Cadence Notter 5'6" | DS/L Covenant Christian | 2022 State IN , 5-6, Covenant Christian, Circle City, Prep Dig #22
As the ’bro for Circle’s 16-1 this past spring, she was asked to do a ton in both serve receive and defense. When in left back, she can get every hard-driven ball in the angle and cover every tip behind the block. When in middle back, she’s responsible for the junk off of the block and the misgivings of a not-so-closed block in front of her. Her serve receive is also excellent; she’s ofter asked to cover more than she should because of the passers next to her, but can easily do so.
