Continue ReadingScoring is a key aspect of the game of volleyball. It doesn’t matter how good a team is in defense or if it has a great setter, if it doesn’t score points there’s no way it will win a match. Even though a good offense is the one that involves at least a few players, some hitters naturally are more used by their teams due to their great efficiency and these are five athletes who had these roles at the Class 1A in 2019 and will likely carry the same loads again next season.
Tiffany Chandler Tiffany Chandler 5'10" | OH La Center | 2021 State WA – Senior – Outside Hitter/Right Sider – La Center
A versatile offensive player, who’s dangerous from both the left and the right sides, Chandler was the centerpiece of La Center’s offense last year. The new role got the 5’10” player to be the team’s main scorer and have more kills than the rest or her teammates combined – her 354 kills also nearly tripled the 136 she had during her sophomore season. Even though the Wildcats didn’t advance to the State Championship, she still earned a selection to the All-State second team. The second-best hitter in the division in 2019 with a .365 efficiency, she’s the number 20 player at prepdig.com’s class of 2021 ranking.
Liv King – Senior – Outside Hitter – Lynden Christian
King carried Lynden Christian to a fifth-place finish at the State Championship with her nearly flawless offensive game. Despite of her 5’7” frame, the outside hitter had no problems to use her great vertical and shot selection to lead the Lync’s offensive as she headed to the tournament in Yakima with 335 kills under her belt. Her performance earned her a nomination for the All-State second team.
Katie Rainville – Senior – Middle-Blocker – Chelan
State champions Chelan had a well-oiled offense led by senior outside hitter Emma McLaren and Elly Collins, but middle-blocker Katie Rainville also found a way to consistently score for the Lady Goats. It was her, by the way, who scored the game-winning point in last year’s State Championship final against King’s. The middle-blocker was lethal when set in the center of the net and also posted impressive numbers with her blocking and serving, deservedly earning a spot in the All-State first team alongside her teammates.
Cora ter Kuile – Senior – Outside Hitter – Bellevue Christian
The 6’1” ter Kuile was integral in virtually everything Bellevue Christian did in 2019. The outside hitter was the team’s leading server, digger and receiver, but her main role with the Vikings was to score points, which he did in great fashion by registering 332 kills and a hitting success of .254. The team struggled in the State Championship with two early setbacks, but that didn’t hurt ter Kuile as she still earned an honorable mention for the All-State team.
Brooke Silvernail – Senior – Outside Hitter/Right Sider – La Salle
Silvernail is not the prototypical scoring machine as she’s not as tall as you’d expect, but she gets the job done with the weapons she has. The La Salle outside hitter excels when hitting quick sets and finding unlikely angles that surprise the opponent’s defensive system and rarely makes mistakes. The Lightning crashed out of the State Championship after just two matches, but that enough time for Silvernail to earn her third-straight All-State first-team selection.
