While most of the top performers of a high school volleyball season are deservedly awarded a spot in the All-State team, a few others fly under-the-radar and put up big numbers in a more quiet way. That was the case with these five players, so keep an eye on them when the 2020 season starts for the Class 1A in Washington.
Hailey Ro – Setter – Junior – Bellevue Christian
Hailey Ro was probably the best setter not to make the All-State team in 2019. Her 430 assists and her average of 6.4 per set were on par with the best in the division and she still had the added bonus of being an efficient server, registering 43 aces during the season. Her connection with star outside hitter Cora ter Kuile should prove again vital for the Vikings in the upcoming season.
Grace Powell – Middle-Blocker/Right Sider – Junior – La Center
Grace Powell was a great partner for La Center’s star Tiffany Chandler Tiffany Chandler 5'10" | OH La Center | 2021 State WA in 2019. While the All-State outside had the most kills for the Wildcats last season, the six-footer Powell topped the charts in aces (35) and blocks (60). With huge physical potential, the junior is expected to refine a few more details heading into 2020, therefore becoming an even more dangerous player.
Rae Wartelle – Middle-Blocker/Outside Hitter – Sophomore – Annie Wright
Rae Wartelle certainly didn’t look like a freshman for Annie Wright last season. In her first year of high school volleyball, the versatile player was arguably the Gators’ most important piece as she led the team in kills (123) and blocks (49) and ranked third in digs (154) and serve receiving (168). Players tend to make a huge leap from their freshmen to their sophomore years and if that’s the case with Wartelle, the sky is the limit.
Avaree Dumars – Outside Hitter – Senior – Cascade Christian
Avaree Dumars was the primary scoring option for Cascada Christian in 2019 and she didn’t disappoint. The 5’9” outside hitter showed a strong game at the net and led the team in kills (272) and ranked second in blocks (17). In her senior season with the Cougars, she’ll presumably be even more of a go-to player for the team and should be able to show even more.
Genevieve Wilkinson – Libero/Defensive Specialist – Junior – Sultan
Genevieve Wilkinson has put up some monster defensive numbers for Sultan in 2019 as she had impressive 566 digs, averaging 7.2 per set. As a sophomore, she was also the team’s top serve receiver with 417 passes and most lethal server with 60 aces. The Turks rely on Wilkinson for a number of things and she hasn’t disappointed so far – and most likely won’t in 2020 either.
