The 2020 season of the Class 1B in Washington state should have top-level competition from start to finish and these five teams might be one step ahead of the other as they have some of the best setters in the division.
LouEllen Reed – Senior – Oakesdele
LouEllen Reed has been a stud for division’s perennial contender Oaskesdele over the entirety of her high school career. A two-time All-State first team member, the 5’7” setter makes 30-assist performances look trivial and excels on her ball distribution. Unsurprisingly, the Nighthawks have played in the State Championship final in each of the three seasons she has been with the team, winning two of them.
Abbey Boas – Junior – Grace Academy
Grace Academy had a successful 2019 campaign as the team competed at the State Championship for the first time after 13 attempts. Much of what the Eagles accomplished last season should be credited to Abbey Boas as the sophomore setter guided the team’s offense with extreme intelligence and was one of just two members in the squad to earn an honorable mention to the All-State team.
Rylee Vining – Senior – Colton
Colton missed the State Championship for a second consecutive year in 2019, but the Wildcats had a bright spot in setter Rylee Vining. The 5’3” prospect showed she’s ready to guide her team to better finishes as she had a junior campaign of 375 assists, averaging 6.7 per set. She also led the Wildcats in aces (36) and was fourth in digs (180), providing a great all-around contribution to the team, which prompted her to an All-State honorable mention.
Mimi Isaak – Junior – Almira-Coulee-Hartline
Mimi Isaak did a great job in doubling up as a setter and right sider for Almira-Coulee-Hartline in 2019. The 5’8” prospect had both setting and hitting duties with the Warriors and kept up with the good level of fellow setter/right sider and All-State second-team selection Makenna Oliver, trailing her from close range in assists (320 to Oliver, 316 to Isaak).
Lily Richards – Freshman – Three Rivers Christian
Lily Richards has provided Three Rivers Christian with much more one would expect from an eight-grader as she clearly didn’t feel the pressure of orchestrating the team’s offense as an elementary school student. The 5’3” setter dished out 520 assists throughout the season, averaging 5.8 per set, and had her three main hitters almost equally involved as all of them registered more than 150 kills. She will return for her freshman campaign with the Eagles in 2020 filled with confidence.
