In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. As our series reaches its fourth week, it’s time to address Class 2B.
Colfax
Even though Colfax finished seventh at last year’s State Championship, the school is undeniably a force to reckon in the division. The Bulldogs won four titles in the last seven seasons and can be proud of a total of six wins over the last 12 years, making of them almost contenders by default when a new tournament starts. The team didn’t graduate any seniors last season, meaning All-State Team selections Kierstyn York, Justice Brown and Anni Cox will all be back for another year.
Their three key players are:
Kierstyn York – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Kiersty York’s nomination for the All-State second team last year, progressing from an honorable mention in 2018, was a statement of the great season she had with Colfax. The six-foot middle-blocker was the team’s main attacking force, ending the season with 302 kills, many of which registered during the State Championships, which she ended on a high note, registering 19 and 20 kills in the Bulldogs’ last two matches. She also added 44 blocks to her total over the season.
Anni Cox – Libero – Senior
Anni Cox had to settle for an All-State Team honorable mention in 2019 after being a second-team selection the year before, but that by no means indicates she had a down season. As solid as ever, the 5’3” defender was at the top of her game when Colfax most needed her, combining for 29 digs and nine aces in the team’s final two matches at the State Championships. She ended the tournament with 361 digs to her name and solidified herself as a top defender in the division.
Justice Brown – Setter – Junior
Justice Brown excelled in her first year with Colfax, playing under her mother, head coach Brandy Brown. The 5’6” setter did a great job in coordinating the Bulldogs’ offense and her good work was highlighted in the last two matches of the State Championship, in which she registered 62 assists and 11 aces. The great performance earned her an All-State team honorable mention.
