The Player of the Week (POTW) is for the player who was the best two way player during that week’s games. The week consists of all matches from Sunday to Saturday. The Setter, Attacker and Defender of the Week are the top players in those categories but a player can only win one award each week. The Team of the Week is the top team for that period. A certificate for the award will be sent to each school for the recipients. We will also have monthly awards, All Division Awards, and All State Awards as well. Award priority is given for teams who submit scores and statistics but not exclusively using that criteria.
For the week of October 4-October 10, 2020, we had a plethora of outstanding performances which we will give shout outs as well. Lots of matches were played and lots of worthy players for the awards this week. It’s great to have so many matches despite the pandemic. Now, onto the awards:
Stonebridge is no stranger to accolades and awards and the reigning state champion has continued on their dominant ways, earning our Team of the Week Award. The Cavaliers swept all three matches this week against Gateway Christian, Denbigh Baptist and Broadwater Christian with outstanding performances from their strong nucleus of talent. The reigning champs held the opposition to single digits in 4 of the 9 sets and never gave up 18 points in a single set. This week’s performance kicks off their season 3-0, after a 35-4 record last season.
Stonebridge’s Freshman Setter Duo earn our Co-Setters of the week. Emily Hinton and Molly Williams start off their high school careers with great performances in the Cavalier’s three sweeps. Emily tallied 48 assists in the three matches while splitting setting duties with Molly Williams. Molly tallied 42 assists of her own for the Cavs in running a dominant and proficient offensive attack.
Our Defender of the Week is Megan James Megan James 5'7" | OH Guardian Christian | 2022 State VA , from Guardian Christian Academy. The dynamic captain of the Royal Knights continues her backcourt dominance with 23 more digs to lead the state in digs per set (6.0) and is second in overall digs with 96. For her career, the junior Outside Hitter has amassed 374 digs. As an added bonus, Megan added 40 kills in their 3-1 win over Grace Christian this week.
Amelia Matson is the PrepDig Virginia Attacker of the Week, another outstanding Freshman from Stonebridge. The 5’8 Outside Hitter has been one of the offensive leaders for the Cavaliers early in the season. For the three matches, she compiled 37 kills in 9 sets and is in the top 5 in the state for kills per set, hitting percentage (calculated as (kills minus errors), divided by total attempts) and total kills.
Berkeley Stenger wins our Player of the Week Award this week. This was one of the toughest to decide with so many stellar performances. The 5’5 sophomore Setter from Denbigh Baptist was strong in their two matches this week including a dramatic 5 set win over Hampton Christian Academy. She had 15 kills, 4 blocks, 8 aces and 29 assists in the two matches. She also posted a .714 hitting percentage in their five set win over HCA. Her teammate Hope Parrish was also strong this week with 27 kills and 29 digs. Others considered for the award were Junior Drew Williams Drew Williams DS/L Stonebridge | 2023 VA from Stonebridge, and Grace Bickley Grace Bickley 5'9" | OH Portsmouth Christian | 2021 State VA and from Portsmouth Christian.
