The Eagles Fall Showcase, held October 17, 2020 in Fredericksburg, provided almost 200 young women the opportunity to show their talents to college coaches and evaluators for the opportunity to continue their playing careers at the next level. It was a diverse group of players from throughout the commonwealth and East Coast and even a player from Colorado. We take a look at the Middle Hitters for the Class of 2022 from the Showcase. They come to us from all over the state, form established prospects to up and coming talents.
Faith McLawthorn plays for Brunswick Academy and Lake Country Volleyball Club. She’s a 6’0 Middle Hitter who can also play Outside Hitter. She’s athletic with a 24 inch vertical and a strong arm. She is goofy footed in her approach and if she can learn proper footwork, will improve her stock as a recruit or may be forced to move to Opposite/Right Side. She has good size and wing span as a blocker and reads the game relatively well. She has strong growth potential with her size and athleticism and refining some of the fundamentals will help her greatly. She can be a DII prospect with some work and refinement.
Simone Barry is another tall, athletic Middle Hitter from Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia. The 6’0 Junior patrols the net as a strong blocker. She reads the play as it is developing and get good penetration on her block moves. She sets a very steady block and doesn’t drift too far when moving laterally. She makes herself available to hit in serve receive and transition. Simone hits with power and range. She attack the opposing block high but is athletic enough to hit the ball down as well near the 3 meter line. She’s a solid DIII prospect.
Ella Toothman, a Junior from Central High School, is an athletic Middle Hitter/Blocker who is raw but has solid potential. She needs to refine some fundamentals and footwork to maximize her potential. She puts up a good block and as she learns the game, will improve her instincts and reactions. She has a good arm and sees the court well. She knows the holes in the defense and attacks purposefully to score points. She is energetic and aggressive. She currently grades at a mid-level Division III prospect.
Sydney Mitchel is a 6’3 Middle Blocker from Highland High School from Culpepper, Virginia. She is a raw talent with the potential to become a dominant force at the net. At 6’3, she covers a lot of area with her block radius and quickness. She needs to refine her arm awing and footwork to maximize her potential. She already is a powerful hitter and intimidating blocker but with learning to use torque and proper approach mechanics, she could improve to a potential Division I prospect.
Gabrielle Atwell is a versatile Middle Hitter from Spotwood High School and Next Revolution Volleyball Club. She is a swiss army knife type of player who can literally play every position on the court. She is the most diverse player of the Middle Hitters from the group in attendance. At 5’10. She can swing either pin and also has good serve receive skills. She is a solid setter and could develop into a very strong setter at the collegiate level. As an attacker, Gabrielle attacks with range and power. She has very good court awareness and good volleyball IQ. She is energetic and plays with a fiery competitiveness. She is solid at Division II in potential but could go higher.
Breda Brosey was also in played at the showcase. Breda plays for Loudoun Elite Volleyball Club in Northern Virginia and plays high school for Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Virginia.
