First we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
The east portion of the 1B Southeast District is arguably the best in the division having among its six high schools Pomeroy and Oaksdale, last year’s finalists of the entire class, and their three best players are:
LouEllen Reed – Setter – Senior – Oaksdale
LouEllen Reed’s game has massively impacted Oaksdale as the team made it to the State Championship final in each of her three seasons as the team’s starting setter, taking the title in 2017 and 2018. The 5’7” setter is expected to return hungrier and even more determined after the Nighthawks lost the title last year and if there’s anything she could still add to her excellent game after three-straight All-State first-team nominations, they will certainly take it.
Josie Schultheis – Outside Hitter – Senior – Colton
Josie Schultheis’ efforts led Colton to finish third in the district last season, which is quite a great finish considering Pomeroy and Oaskdale are perennial powerhouses in the entire league. The 5’7” outside hitter used her strong all-around game to contribute to the Wildcats in every possible aspect of the game as was not only their most effective offensive player with 186 kills but also its best defensive player, registering 357 digs and 191 passes – she also had 29 aces. Her solid season earned her spots in the All-State team as an honorable mention and in the All-League first team.
Keely Maves – Outside Hitter/Right Sider – Junior – Pomeroy
Keely Maves’ strong game might have been a little bit overlook last season when she was part of a super-talented and senior-heavy Pomeroy roster that won the State Championship. The 5’11” outside hitter made a great impact in the Lady Pirates’ triumph, though, registering five kills and five blocks in the final against Oaksdale – she had six more blocks on their semifinal match. With the seniors now gone and her ability to play as an outside hitter or right sider, Maves should become Pomeroy’s centerpiece next season and she’s clearly up for the job.
