It’s been an interesting time to say the least and with over half of the teams in the VISAA playing less than 10 matches. Players, coaches and schools made the absolute best of a tough situations and created memories and competition that we have missed so much in the past few months. Seniors got to complete their scholastic career and we will honor them in their own article, which they have more than earned.
The PrepDig Team of the Week is the perennial powerhouse Stonebridge Cavaliers. They swept their semifinal match against Broadwater Academy (25-13, 25-5, 25-14) to continue their dominant Fall season. In the finals, Portsmouth was swept (25-14, 25-10, 25-8) as well to get the Conference Championship, ending four of the last five years with a championship. Many of the top players in the area are key contributors to the Cavaliers success. Two senior captains ended their high school careers with consecutive championships in Middle Blocker Kailah Boone and Libero Abby Hinton Abby Hinton 5'3" | DS/L Stonebridge | 2021 State VA . Boone, the 5’11 Middle Hitter, has dominant performance against Broadwater Academy with 9 kills in 12 attempts. Abby notched 6 aces against Broadwater and dominated the backcourt with 9 digs and 5 aces in the championship match. Junior captain Outside Hitter Drew Williams Drew Williams DS/L Stonebridge | 2023 VA was solid as always with 11 kills and 17 digs in the playoffs. The next wave of talent was also a vital cog in the winning machine that is Cavaliers Volleyball. A trio of freshmen helped lead the offense, two setters and one of the top hitters in the VISAA. Amelia Matson continued her dominance over opponents and solidifying herself as one of the top players in the state with 25 kills in the playoffs. The offense is run by a dynamic freshmen duo of Molly Williams and Emily Hinton. The setters combined on 62 assists in the play-offs with the dual sweeps. Junior Defensive Specialist Maddie Gray added 5 aces while Senior Emma Ditman closed her career with a 8 kill and 7 ace performance for the Cavs.
Defender of the Week: The week we have co-defenders of the week with Stonebridge’s Drew Williams Drew Williams DS/L Stonebridge | 2023 VA and Broadwater Academy’s Molly Brown splitting the award. Our defender of the week was a tight race with many players putting up supreme defensive efforts. Drew helped the Cavaliers to another conference championship and undefeated season. The Junior Captain and 2019 All State Selection led the team with 17 digs in the two matches for the champs without giving up an ace to the opposition. Hannah Davis and Molly Brown, the senior and sophomore from Broadwater Academy had a state high Digs (18) for the match. Stonebridge Senior Middle Blocker Kailah Boone was also considered for the award, stuffing a state high 4.5 blocks this week.
Setter of the Week: Our setter of the week comes from the conference champions with Freshman Emily Hinton earning the award. The 5’5 Setter led the Cavaliers with 39 assists in the play-offs for Stonebridge. She closes out the season 5th in the state in assists (233) as someone who split the setting duties on her team. Other notable performances: Fellow Cavalier Freshman had 23 assists for the champions in their two sweeps to close out the Fall season. Portsmouth Christian’s offensive leader, Emma Beasley had 33 assists in two matches, culminating in runner up performance in the Metro Conference. Atlantic Shores senior captain led the Seahawks offense with 19 assists, adding 6 aces and 8 digs. Broadwater’s Taylor Leland had 15 assists and Denbigh Baptists sophomore standout Berkeley Stenger ended her season with a 9 ace, 13 dig and 23 assist performance.
Attacker of the Week: Stonebridge Freshman Amelia Matson is our Attacker of the Week. The 5’8 Outside Hitter has carried the load for the Cavaliers this season, leading the team in all attacking categories. This week, she put down 25 kills, adding 3 aces and 6 digs to her stellar freshman campaign. She has been one of the top attackers in the state all season. Hope Parrish is an honorable mention this week with another outstanding offensive load on the week. The sophomore from Denbigh Baptist posted a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs in their play-off match. Atlantic Shore’s Senior Kayleigh Lance also had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior Outside Hitter Drew Williams Drew Williams DS/L Stonebridge | 2023 VA from Stonebridge also had a good week offensively with 11 kills in 19 swings for the conference champions.
Player of the Week: Portsmouth Christian’s Outside Hitter Grace Bickley Grace Bickley 5'9" | OH Portsmouth Christian | 2021 State VA concludes her illustrious high school career as our Championship Player of the Week. Grace is no stranger to awards with the 2019 Player of the Year Award for , 2019 First Team All State Selections and a AVCA National Player of the week award this season. Grace had a rare triple-double in their match against Gateway Christian with 14 kills, a career high 14 aces and 17 digs. For the week, The 5’8 senior tallied 33 kills on the week with 18 aces and 34 digs and a runner-up finish in conference. As an honorable mention, Grace’s teammate, fellow senior Victoria Tucker also concluded her high school career with a great week with 31 kills, 4 aces and 11 digs to close out the 2020 Fall VISAA season.
