The director, longtime Peninsula Catholic Volleyball Coach Tommy Thomas, had a vision for the growth of the program and with the aid of numerous people are making that vision a reality with the Hampton Roads Sportsplex. Housed at the site of the former Rebounderz Family Fun Park in Newport News, the facility is set to open around the first of the year. The building at at 12650 Patrick Henry Drive in Newport News. They will host a variety of volleyball tournaments this season including sanctioned events from the Amateur Athletic Union, Juniors Volleyball Association and USA Volleyball.
The facility will house the youth travel program, camps and clinics as well as developmental programs as well. They have 4 competition courts available as well as two courts that can be used for practices, lessons and u13 volleyball activities. There is plenty of space for social distancing in the 34,000 square foot facility indoor with ample ceiling height of 27 feet to beams and 29 to the ceiling. Their beach program will continue to be run out of the Paradise Ocean Club which has about 90 athletes partaking in the program. The area around the building also provides opportunities for Coastal Hampton Roads to host grass volleyball events on site as well. There is ample parking for the venue as well and the traffic flow should allow for minimal headaches when arriving and departing the venue.
The building will also have one of the largest concession stands at a volleyball venue, a media room, offices for staff and an area that will house an athletic trainer who will be on site twice a week to help with the athletes. LEAD Sports will also have a designated area for the players to do strength and conditioning on site as a premiere performance endeavor. The U18’s coach, Karissa Cumberbatch will continue to handle the recruiting duties for the program.
The club has 13 travel teams this season, 11 girls and 2 boys. They also run elementary and middle school programs throughout the year. This year’s program has some of the top players in the Hampton Roads area for boys and girls including future Hampton University Pirate Madison Clark Madison Clark 6'1" | RS Peninsula Catholic | 2021 State VA , Brandon Leary (’21) and Evan Snodgrass (’22) who will join the George Mason University Patriots Volleyball Program.
