For many players, it’s a great chance to take steps towards our old life. Some teams are firing on all cylinders while others are feeling out new lineups and positions. The race to the state championships is right around the corner. Here are some of the top performances from the week:
Maury High had a great week with dual sweeps of Norcom and Norview. Cooper Chiles led the offense with 21 kills and 5 aces on the week in the two wins. Matt Phillips put down 5 kills against Norcom. Phillips, Chiles and Hayden Lynch combined on 31 service aces in the Norcom sweep. Michael Graham put down 5 kills and added 2 aces, while Beckett Pate dropped 8 kills against Norview.
First Colonial upset #8 Princess Anne with stellar performances by Aidan Muckon with 13 kills, Collin Murray 12 kills and Nathan Robichaud with 9 kills and 3 aces in the come from behind win.
Frank Cox swept their first two matches of the season behind solid performances from two of the area’s top players. Daniel Hurley led the way with 24 kills in the two matches last week. Chris Peters had 6 kills against First Colonial ad will be a sold performer this season. Tyler Poole added 6 kills against First Colonial. Kyle Schlaepfer launched 5 aces against Bayside.
Denbigh’s Jamaury Starks had a solid double-double with 17 kills and 22 digs The senior is a tremendous athlete who is a collegiate prospect at Libero for mid level college programs. Ray Dela Cruz dished out 32 assists and 5 kills. Chandler Wilson added 9 kills for the Patriots.
Leandro Cortado and Nate Chown combined for 20 kills in Ocean Lakes 3-1 victory over Landstown.
Kemspville swept Green run behind 51 assists from Andrew Burmeister and a combined 33 kills from Brett Evans and Cason Strawbridge.
Gloucester dominated Kecoughtan with All State Attacker Jack Sandahl and Jack Ronan combining for 15 kills, with Quinn Estlack dishing 20 assists. Gavin Cohn and Kurt Carter each served 3 aces each.
Ethan Flora had 33 assists for Hickory’s win over Great Bridge. Kody Rogan and Phillip Van Essendelft each tallied 16 kills in the match.
Grassfield swept Indian River in a tightly contested match. For Grassfield, Diego Eljaiek had 22 kills, Logan McConnell finished with 17 kills and Connor Spencer added 26 digs.
Zak Tucker and Jayden carried the offensive load for Oscar Smith in their sweep over Western Branch. Tucker had 19 kills and four aces, while Durrah added eight kills and two blocks for the Tigers. Tucker added 16 kills, 14 digs and 6 aces in a sweep over Deep Creek. Jun Velez added 6 aces and 8 digs, while Christina Harris put down 6 kills for the Tigers.
Jeremy Wimmer had 22 kills and 21 digs in Salem’s 5-set victory .over Green Run (23-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11).
