Continue ReadingWe’re about a month into the long-waited and hugely-anticipated high school volleyball season in Washington. The moment we all have been waiting for is here and even though we haven’t been able to watch it in person for the most part, several players are putting up some great performances out there.
Some familiar faces are producing as much as expected while some new ones are exceeding expectations and performing a lot better than many would think. Starting this week, we’ll highlight the top performers in each of the six divisions in the state in a series of articles.
There are the 2A and 2B divisions’ top performers.
2A
Gabriella MacKenzie – Outside Hitter – Burlington-Edison – 2021
Gabriella MacKenzie moved from her original middle-blocker position to outside hitter this season and the move has made wonders for her game. The six-footer is now more involved in the game and she’s been making the most of it, leading Burlington-Edison to a 10-2 win record so far with strong production in kills (299, the most in the team), digs (second, with 149) and aces (second, with 20). She recently committed with Menlo College, in California.
Kennedy Huesties – Middle-Blocker – Woodland – 2021
Woodland’s positive start of the season, with seven wins in their first ten matches, has a lot to do with Kennedy Huesties’ good form. The six-foot middle-blocker has improved her game from past seasons and became a key contributor for the Beavers early on. Huesties is part of one of the best middle-blocker duos in the division with Emma Swett Emma Swett 6'1" | MB Woodland | 2021 State WA and has produced 50 kills, 14 aces, 25 blocks and 14 digs so far.
Amey Rainaud – Setter – Burlington-Edison – 2022
Amey Rainaud has been a solid contributor for Burlington-Edison since she joined the program in 2018 and she’s on pace to yet another prolific season with the Lady Tigers. The 5’7” setter has already reached triple digits in assists (387) and digs (161) and has also produced a good amount of kills (39) and aces (22). The highlight of her season so far was a 3-2 win against Nooksack Valley in which she had 53 assists, 25 digs and six kills.
2B
Lillyan Barnum – Outside Hitter – Ocosta – 2021
Ocosta is not having the greatest season with four wins in 11 matches, but outside hitter Lillyan Barnum has been standing out in a variety of ways for the Wildcats. The 5’7” prospect is showing a great all-around game and she’s leading her team’s efforts on offense with 98 kills and defense with 66 digs. Barnum is also Ocosta’s leading server with 26 aces and its second-best serve-receiver with 94 passes.
Hannah Lindstrom – Setter – Northwest Christian – 2021
Despite Northwest Christian’s frustrating 1-4 win record so far, it’s hard to argue against the fact that Hannah Lindstrom has had a good start of a season. One of the team captains, the 5’6” setter has been a bright spot in the Wolverines’ campaign so far. Lindstrom is taking care of her duties as the team’s setter, having tallied 107 assists already (averaging 5.6 per set), and has also contributed in other areas with 23 digs and four aces.
Ady Maletkze – Defensive Specialist – Cle Elum-Roslyn – 2023
Ady Maletzke has substantially grown her role with Cle Elum-Roslyn in her second season of high school volleyball. The 5’7” prospect has found her spot in the team as a defensive specialist and has been doing well so far despite the Warriors’ winless campaign. Maletzke is producing high averages for both digs (15 per match, a total of 60) and passes (15.8 per match, a total of 63), helping to stabilize the team’s defensive game.
