It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. As we first discuss the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 4A Division, let’s take a look at some of the best setters to compete there.
Bayli Miller – HS: Decatur – Club: Skyline Juniors – 2022
Bayli Miller led division’s state champions Decatur to a remarkable season in 2020, one in which the Eagles lost just one of their 32 matches. The 5’9” setter was an integral part of the team’s success as her leadership and reliable sets have positioned her excellent hitters really well to score points. Miller, who plays for a strong club team in Texas in Skyline Juniors, stepped up big time in the State Championship final against Wimberley, delivering 35 assists, nine digs and three aces. Her spectacular season ended with nominations for both the All-Tournament team and the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team.
Gracie Bell – HS: Aubrey – Club: Club 940 – 2022
When a setter is awarded as her team’s MPV, it’s easy to notice her importance. Anyway, it would be difficult to not realize Gracie Bell is the heart and soul of her high school team Aubrey after she ended the 2020 season with 1,037 assists and 391. Extremely technical and intelligent, Bell ran the Lady Chaps’ offense masterfully, leading the team to a 20-8 win record. The creative 5’9” setter ended the season with a handful of awards, including District Setter of the Year, and as an All-State third team member according to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA).
Clarissa Soza – HS: Tuloso-Midway – Club: SA Force – 2022
Clarissa Soza is another setter from the class of 2022 who has put on a clinic during the last season. The 5’8” Sosa had a tremendous performance with her high school Tuloso-Midway, registering 749 assists, 163 digs, 87 kills and 59 aces. Her game is very smooth and her movement on the court and touch on the ball are extremely natural, traits of an especially-gifted and intelligent player. Sosa made it to the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) All-State team last season and was also part of the All-District team as a junior.
