Great setters can come from any class, and this group of 2023s in Nebraska has quite a few noteworthy athletes. With this high school season in full swing, some talented junior setters have led their teams to fast starts this year. A few such players are familiar names that we’ve discussed before, while others are just starting to make themselves known.
Here are some 2023 setters to follow around the Cornhusker State as the 2021 season rolls along!
Skylar Walters Skylar Walters 5'9" | S Millard West | 2023 State NE – 5’8 S – Millard West
Walters is a player that Millard West will like to rally around. She got some valuable starting experience last year due to injury, and now the electrifying Wildcats offense is under her full control. This junior setter does a great job distributing to the talented hitters around her, and she should continue to thrive as Millard West makes a Class A title push.
Rebecca Baker Rebecca Baker 5'9" | S Bergan | 2023 State NE – 5’9 S – Archbishop Bergan
This is a talented junior that I’ve mentioned here before. Baker is an aggressive, athletic setter who can also make an impact swinging on the pin. Her Archbishop Bergan team is off to a solid 3-1 start and looks intent on making it back to the state title match.
Elli Mehlin – 5’6 S – Kearney
Mehlin is currently leading all Nebraska juniors in totals assists this season. Kearney has been busy so far in the 2021 campaign, as they’ve already competed in 21 sets. Despite the hectic start, Mehlin’s setting has brought consistency and stability to the Bearcats’ lineup.
Kasey Schuster Kasey Schuster 5'9" | S Aurora | 2023 State NE – 5’5 S – Aurora
Aurora has already faced a tough slate of matches, but Schuster always seems to deliver good performances regardless of which team is across the net. She consistently makes good choices and sets up her hitters with favorable swings. The Huskies expect to be a postseason threat almost every year, and talented players like Schuster can help bring the team to that level.
Libbie Ball – 5’5 S – Palmyra
I briefly mentioned in yesterday’s feature that Palmyra was a team to watch after a successful start to the fall season. The leader at the setting position for the Panthers has been Ball, and her second contact is only part of her contribution to this team. She plays excellent floor defense and is not afraid to attack at the net when opposing middles aren’t expecting it. Palmyra will surely lean on their junior setter as they look to preserve their unblemished record.
Breelle Miller – 5’9 S – Cambridge
Cambridge is yet another team on this feature that has already made a habit of winning. The Trojans are 4-1 thus far behind the play of Miller at the setter spot. She compiled an impressive 12 assists per set in a statement win over Wauneta-Palisade. These good performances will be needed for some key matchups for Cambridge next week, including a Thursday battle with Overton.
