Some players didn’t need more than three or four matches to show what they can do and as production in volleyball can come in a variety of ways, we’ll spend this week highlighting the young prospects who are off to a great start in their campaigns.
In our first article, we feature the high-volume scorers of the early days of Washington’s 2021 high school volleyball season.
Elle Thomas – Outside Hitter – HS: White River – 2022
White River is off to a tremendous start as the Hornets have won each of their first three matches without dropping a single set. A senior in the team, outside hitter Elle Thomas had a huge impact in the team’s hot start, dropping as many as 54 points (49 kills, four aces and one block) in those matches. The 6’1” pin hitter had 19 kills and one ace against Lynden, 16 kills and one block against Clover Park and 14 kills and three aces against Franklin Pierce.
Lauren Riffe – Outside Hitter – HS: Interlake – Club: Sudden Impact – 2022
One of the most explosive and consistent scorers in the entire state, Lauren Riffe is showing once again how much damage she can do on a volleyball court with Interlake. The 5’9” outside hitter has led the team to three-straight victories early in the season, totaling 43 kills and five aces so far. She started the season with a 13-point (12 kills, one ace) performance against Mount Si, followed it up with 15 (all in kills) against Holy Names Academy and improved to 20 (16 kills, four aces) in her most recent showing, against Newport-Bellevue.
Audrey Wellhausen – Right-Sider – HS: Mary Walker – 2023
Audrey Welhausen emerged as a prolific scorer for Mary Walker last season and seems to be on pace to another productive shift with the Chargers in her junior campaign. The 5’10” right sider has kept things steady and efficient across the team’s four matches so far, adding up to 28 kills, four blocks and two aces. Her best performances were in a 1-2 loss to Lake Roosevelt in which she delivered 11 points (eight kills, two blocks, one ace) and in a straight-set triumph over Davenport in which she had the same production with ten kills and one ace.
