The first week of competition brings a handful of can’t-miss matches and as we understand it’s a lot to process, especially with two seasons separated by just a few months, we’ll recommend one match for you to follow over the next few days, highlighting the teams involved and their most exciting prospects.
This is our suggestion for Thursday, September 9:
North Creek vs Roosevelt – 7.00pm
The Jaguars of the North Creek High School out of Bothell ended last season in good form, winning six straight matches after losing the first one. The team coached by Richard Abiador will face strong competition in the 4A KingCo district but has talent on both sides of the ball and seems poised for another solid campaign.
The Roughriders from the Roosevelt High School in Seattle compete in the 3A Metro district, one of the toughest in the Evergreen State. The team lost a handful of seniors from last year, most notably All-Metro League selections Taylor Bailey and Sami Dammand, but head coach Lamar Hurd has a group of talented players who can lead the team to success this season.
Players to Watch – North Creek
Kyleene Filimaua – Outside Hitter – Club: DaKine Warriors – 2023
One of the most popular names in high school volleyball in the state of Washington and to many the top prospect of the class of 2023, Kyleene Filimaua has it all. She might be 6’1”, and her powerful offense leaves no doubt about her size, but her game as is as smooth as the one of a libero as this prospect masters every skill a volleyball player should. She has been a high-volume producer for the Jaguars since she joined the team and that won’t change until she leaves to play volleyball and beach volleyball for Florida State in about two years.
Isabella Moon – Libero – Club: North Pacific Juniors – 2023
One of just eight players in the entire state to join Filimaua in the 2021 edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom Watch List, Isabella Moon keeps things going on the backcourt for the Jaguars. A defensive standout, the 5’5” Moon is one of the best in the entire state when it comes to keeping the ball up in the air because of her tremendous ball control and her dedication to do what it takes to avoid a point. She has strongly emerged as one of the best in the state in her position with her play for both the Jaguars and her club team North Pacific Juniors.
Players to Watch – Roosevelt
Eva Atkins – Right Sider/Middle Blocker – Club: DaKine Warriors – 2022
Eva Atkins is a phenomenal offensive player, who can cause damage from anywhere at the net. A 6’3” prospect, she produces in bunches, having registered 210 kills and 97 blocks in the last full season of high school volleyball in Washington, in 2019. She plays as an opposite for her club team DaKine, in an attempt to put her in an even better position to explore her physical and technical tools. She has recently committed to Columbia University after making it to the All-District team.
Hannah Ogborn – Defensive Specialist/Outside Hitter – Club: Seattle Juniors – 2022
A fantastic defensive player, Hannah Ogborn plays a pivotal role in Roosevelt’s playing system not only by avoiding points on the backcourt but also by starting the team’s offensive options with perfectly-placed passes. The 5’8” defender, who can also play as an outside hitter, is very confident on the ball and has average 8.3 digs and 11.3 passes per match in her high school career. As with Atkins, she also made it to the All-District team last season.
