I was lucky enough to go to CEVA Regionals this season and watch so many top teams compete, and one team that I continued to stop by and watch was G3 16-1. I had not heard of this club prior to this season and was blown away by the skill level of the team. I found their roster and was surprised to not recognize many of the names. After contacting their club director, I was shocked. Most of the team was made of talented 2025s. Almost all their starters were 2025s. And running the offense was none other than Kamden Mitchell Kamden Mitchell 5'10" | S Crescent Valley | 2025 State #41 Nation OR . This team ended up finishing #4 in CEVA, an impressive feat for any team, but especially one composed of mostly 8th graders.
Mitchell’s maturity as a setter is well above those of her peers. She has impeccable decision-making skills, stellar court sense, and sheer natural talent. What a lethal combination. She brings leadership and infectious positivity to the court. And a love for the game that is seen watching her compete.
She, along with many G3 2025 teammates, made the Crescent Valley High School varsity team. The Raiders are relying on their four freshmen to dominate at the high school level, against some big-name athletes. Mitchell showed no fear and is contributing as their starting setter. This team is currently sitting at #3 in the State for 5A rankings, and a large part of this success can be attributed to Mitchell’s impeccable setting skills.
I had the chance to email back and forth with Mitchell, and she answered some questions for us:
- Why did you choose to play volleyball?
When I was seven years old, we moved to Corvallis, Oregon, from Huntington Beach, CA, and my mom volunteered to coach volleyball so I could meet new friends. My mom sparked a love for volleyball in all of us that year. Today those same friends are my G3 Volleyball Club and Crescent Valley High School teammates, Isabella C Jacobson Isabella C Jacobson 5'10" | OH Crescent Valley | 2025 State OR , Vivian Buford Vivian Buford 5'7" | OH Crescent Valley | 2025 State OR , and Dani Street. Over the years, our team chemistry has been undeniable due to the mutual respect and trust we have with one another.
- What is your favorite volleyball memory?
A memorable moment on the court was during the 2021 CEVA Regionals when I secured the match win against NPJ’s 16 national team with an unexpected setter attack. I was so hungry for that victory, and we had such long rallies leading up to that play. I saw the opportunity to secure my team’s #4 rank in Oregon, so I took it. That victory was sweet, and that moment fuels me to keep working towards my goals.
- What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
I have been fortunate to be mentored by pro-baller and Oregon Duck setter alumnus August Raskie. I read her setting rules before every match to prepare for competition mentally; “Keep your athletic body position, feet to the ball, neutral hands, wrist control speed, follow through controls location.” August also taught me the importance of playing with relaxed confidence; because as a setter, I run the show; if I am calm, everyone will follow suit.
- What are your goals for your volleyball career?
I aspire to be a collegiate D1 volleyball player. I love volleyball and work tirelessly developing all aspects of my game year-round. My parents played sports (football and volleyball) for the University of Oregon and have shared stories about their great experiences as D1 Duck athletes. I hope to one day have my own remarkable stories to share.
