There are a lot of wide-open districts to look forward to next week, but here are the four that should be the most challenging.
District 106 at Leland
No. 7 Traverse City Christian looks to be in the driver’s seat in this district, but the Sabres have a tough opener. They will take on the host, Leland, in a semifinal. Leland had to deal with a lot of roster change from the 2020 season, but the Comets have been finding their stride as of late and are a proud program. It will be a tough opening match. Frankfort, Lake Leelanau St. Mary and Suttons Bay will have a say in things as well, but that semifinal is the one circled.
District 115 at Athens
No. 3 Athens has big hopes for a run to Kellogg Arena this year, but the Indians have a difficult path at home. While opening with Burr Oak, Athens would then run into No. 8 Mendon, the 2018 and 2019 D4 state champs. Howardsville Christian, Marcellus and Colon await on the other side of the bracket looking to play spoiler in the finals. Mendon still has a lot of championship experience to rely on and that could make a big difference against Athens.
District 117 at Morrice
Things kick off in this district with a bang, as No. 4 Lansing Christian meets up with No. 12 Fowler. Both teams were quarterfinalists last year and had their sights set on a deep playoff run in 2021. Webberville and Portland. St. Patrick meet up in another opener, while Livingston Christian and Morrice await in the semifinals. While the winner of the opener will need a few more wins, getting that first win will go a long way for the week.
District 121 at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes
This six-team district has a lot of contenders meeting up on the opening night. Clarkston Everest Collegiate and Waterford Our Lady face off in a rivalry match to get things started. Then, No. 10 Oakland Christian meets up with No. 20 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in a great clash. The Eaglets are only in their second year of play and already making waves. Auburn Hills Christian and Pontiac Academy are in the semifinals waiting, but the winner is likely to come from the opening night.
