Since the season started, we’ve run series highlighting the players who are standing out in Washington separating them by division, class or position. Now, with two months of play in the books, we’ll start being a little bit more specific, and give a shoutout to some prospects who barely missed the cut on those first pieces.
As we return to the 1B Division, here are three outside hitters who have been helping their teams in more than one way:
Tia Cates – HS: Mary Walker – 2024
A sophomore, Tia Cates has already become a key player for Mary Walker. After getting some limited playing time as a freshman, she substantially improved her role with the team this season and has been helping on both sides of the ball. Cates is effective at the net, having registered 107 kills, but also brings great value to the Chargers when at the backcourt, where she has already produced 143 digs and 26 aces.
Emily Scrupps – HS: Odessa – Club: North Central Washington – 2022
A six-footer who can play anywhere at the net, Emily Scrupps is set to end her high school career in highly productive fashion. One of the Lady Tigers captains, she’s easily having her best season to date, producing extremely at the net and on defense. Scrupps is currently at 209 kills, 12 blocks, 145 digs, 194 passes and 54 aces for Odessa this season.
Kaci Harman – HS: Republic – 2022
Another versatile senior, Kaci Harman can play in the middle or at either pin for her high school team Republic. Even though she got to play in just 32 sets so far this season, the 5’9” Harman has been extremely productive, having tallied 88 kills, 76 digs, 21 aces and seven blocks.
