The Spike Sport #1 was one of the first of those to take place. Played on December 4 in Missouri City, the event featured eight teams from the Houston area in the 17 Division and ten in the 18. The event was dominated by the traditional Houston Skyline club, which advanced two teams for the final of the gold bracket in both divisions.
PrepDig.com attended the tournament and we’ll use the next few days to highlight some of the most interesting players we spotted there – some are very popular and well-known names, while others are prospects who perhaps were flying under-the-radar.
Today we’ll look at some promising right siders from the 17 Division.
Cayley Hanson Cayley Hanson 6'2" | S Deer Park | 2024 State #43 Nation TX – Skyline 16 Royal – HS: Deer Park – 2024
Skyline 16 Royal ended at the top of the division despite playing older opponents and Cayley Hanson Cayley Hanson 6'2" | S Deer Park | 2024 State #43 Nation TX ’s play was a big reason for it. A 6’2” right sider who can do-it-all on a volleyball court, she was setter of the year in the 22-6A district with her high school team Deer Park but proved to be much more than that. With 16 Royal, she did a great job in setting but was also a prolific hitter when at the net, establishing herself as a scoring treat for the team. Also an outstanding server, Hanson helped her team with her solid passing in a few rotations. She has a very rare combination of great technique and impressive mobility for a player of her size and age. She ranks 12th in our 2024 Prep Dig State Rankings and has been nominated for our Class of 2024 Prep Dig All-State Team.
Kennedy Kays Kennedy Kays 6'2" | OH Bridgeland | 2023 State TX – Skyline 17 Black – HS: Bridgeland – 2023
A highly-productive player for Bridgeland during the last high school season playing as an outside hitter, Kennedy Kays Kennedy Kays 6'2" | OH Bridgeland | 2023 State TX embraced a new role as a right side with Skyline 17 Black and helped the team finish second in the division. Not having to worry about passing, the 6’2” Kays seemed even more comfortable on offense, unquestionably the most promising part of her game. The long-armed Kays has the power and reach to score at ease from the pins and playing on the right seemed to have enhanced this ability even further. She ranks 21st in our 2023 Prep Dig State Rankings.
Mckenna Ferris – Texas Legacy 17 Adidas – HS: Klein Collins – 2023
Mckenna Ferris has just the perfect physical and technical tools to succeed as an opposite. The 5’11” opposite has long arms and a very good leaping ability, a combination that puts her in position to score regardless of the situation. A lefty, Ferris also does extremely well when out-of-system, finding creative solutions and unlikely angles to score points. Her blocking is another highlight of her game and she’s a very good reader of opposing hitters and does a great job in being aggressive with her arms across the net.
