Lots of 3 set matches, nail bitters, and heart breaking sets were played on Sunday. Through all of the excitement, a few players stood out. Here is a list of standout athletes that made an impact on day 2.
Carley Chavez – Alamo 16 Elite
First up is Carley Chavez from Alamo 16 Elite. Alamo finished 2nd over all only losing to HJV in the final game of the day Sunday. Carley made some near impossible plays all day. Scooping blocked balls up off the floor, out of the net, in deep corners, she did not allow the ball to fall with out her hand on the play. She played some truely remarkable defense all day on Sunday.
Marin Higginbotham – Houston Skyline 17 White
Pin hitter Marin Higginbotham stood out this weekend for her series of really good blocks. Playing mostly right side, she was able to put up a great block for her team, and had some great stuff blocks to add to her highlight real. She also can take a really good rip on the ball on the outside as well. Over all, she played really great volleyball on day 2!
Jazmine Gaston Jazmine Gaston 5'9" | OH Anderson | 2024 State TX – Texas Fury 16 Legacy
Jazmine Gaston Jazmine Gaston 5'9" | OH Anderson | 2024 State TX plays 6 rotations for Texas Fury 16 Legacy and for good reason. She was the most solid 6 rotation hitter I saw on Sunday. Her defense is absolutely amazing and gritty. She is long, her reaction time is quick, and she does not let anything get by. As far as her offense she rises well above the block, crushing balls line and cross. She also puts up a huge block touching 10 foot plus. Keep an eye out for Jazmine in the future!
Simone Romriell – Houston Skyline 16 Black
One of my favorite players to have seen this weekend was Simone Romriell of Houston Skyline 16 black. Honestly one of the best setters in the gym all weekend, she played 6 rotations, ran a stellar offense, and blocked decently at only 5’9. Her hands are amazing, her volleyball IQ is very high, and she seemed to have good faith in all of her hitting options. Be on the look out for Simone to be more on the radar.
Lauren Baek – TAV Houston 16 Adidas
Luaren Baek is a setter for TAV Houston 16 Adidas. From the looks of it, she set for her team in a 5-1 for the majority of the day Sunday. Her connection with her hitters was solid, and she worked to better every ball. She definitely is a “next play” athlete, who did not dwell on any mistakes and looked to be a great teammate on and off the floor.
Bri Dunn – Houston Stellar 15 Elite
To round out a solid weekend of volleyball, last but not least is Bri Dunn of Houston Stellar 15 Elite. Bri is a setter/right side for her team, and while I didn’t get to see a lot of setting, what I did see was some great swings from the right side. She fully committs to each swing, going for the kill each time. She was also pretty consistant, not making many errors on the day offensively.
