While most of the top teams and prospects avoid competing every week and set their eyes on the big prize – the National Championship -, the others are still out there, trying to make the most of every opportunity they have to be on the court.
The few tournaments that are still taking place bring a unique opportunity for us to watch players we otherwise wouldn’t if the big dogs were still around and do our best to make the most out of it and give the emerging talents the exposure they deserve.
This past weekend I was at the Skyline Classic #12, a nine-team tournament reuniting 16s teams from the Houston area at the popular Houston Skyline Juniors club. I’m sharing my findings during the week and this time we’ll focus on some of the most influential outside hitters.
Avery Ameen – Catalyst 16 Green – HS: George Ranch – 2024
A 5’8” outside hitter with a solid offensive game, Avery Ameen was Catalyst 16 Green’s focal point at the net. Ameen is a good jumper, can hit the ball hard and does very well in finding open spaces between or around the block. She’s also a solid blocker and is very intelligent with her tips and roll shots too, boasting a well-varied offense.
Carley Ennis – TAV Houston 15 Blue – 2025
Carley Ennis’ game is still coming together, but the potential is clearly there. Ennis is very comfortable on the backcourt, being one of the team’s top passers and a solid defender. Her serving is also very consistent and productive. She’s getting there offensively too as although she has very good reach on her hits, she can (and certainly will) still add more power and improve her timing.
Madison Borgstedte – Asics Willowbrook 16 White – 2024
A consistent outside hitter with good length and excellent technical skills, Madison Borgstedte was one of the key pieces of her Asics Willowbrook 16 White team. She was pretty remarkable on offense, using her size and firepower to make a difference, especially when hitting angle. Borgstedte was also very solid with her passing duties and has all the tools to develop into a very interesting outside hitter in the future.
Jenna Krpec – Catalyst 16 Emerald – HS: East Bernard – 2024
Despite not being super tall or explosive, Jenna Krpec thrived in the tournament by knowing how to make the most of her skills. Also a beach volleyball player, she’s obviously very technical and used that to her favor, offering excellent passing stability to her team and also an effective scoring option with her ability to find god angles and avoid errors.
Taniesha Johnson – PowerSet VC 16-1 – HS: North Shore – 2024
Taniesha Johnson stood out for her impressive athleticism. She isn’t very tall, but can jump out of the gym and has a very powerful right arm. Johnson was extremely successful when hitting around the block and displayed a solid backcourt game too.
