The idea is to do things a little bit differently this year, so after every match I attend, I’ll be posting a quick article highlighting the players that stood out the most in that particular encounter.
The first match I was at was the duel between George Ranch and Clear Springs on August 9. Although they were playing on the road, the Chargers took advantage of their strong returning core to sweep (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) the rebuilding Longhorns in their season-opening match.
Top Performers
The 5’11” Richardson thrived on her double duty once again. She was excellent with her ball handling, running a fast-paced, but also very accurate, offense and possibly even better when hitting. Richardson was the player the Chargers turned to in big moments and she responded really well, converting most of her hitting attempts into points. She was also extremely solid on defense and ended the match with 17 assists and 14 digs.
Carissa Young
Carissa Young
Young played only the net rotations but still managed to make a tremendous impact on the match and her team made some good runs when she was on the court. Her big and technical blocker created issues for George Ranch’s outside hitters and she was also lethal on offense. A six-footer, the left-handed Young showed a wide variety of shots and sided out in important moments during the second set, besides hammering the game-winning point in one of her eight kills.
Azoria Davis
Azoria Davis
The 5’9” Davis was extremely productive at the net, combining power and technique to score. She was extremely effective when hitting angle and tied Young for eight kills during the match. Davis was also very stable on the backcourt, leading the team’s serve-receive efforts, and did an excellent job from the service line, tallying three aces and having a few long runs. She played as a libero in the third set and remained solid until the end.
Bryant’s offensive power was one of the things that kept the Longhorns in the match on a few occasions. Her 6’3” frame gives her the ability to be effective even when out-of-system and her decision-making has improved a lot during the club season. She had a little bit of a difficult run during the third set, in which she repeatedly hit angle right towards a Clear Springs defender, but considering the high volume of sets she gets, these moments are absolutely normal. Bryant also displayed great improvement with her passing and played all six rotations, even hitting from the backcourt.
Steubing provided great stability to George Ranch’s backcourt with her effective and consistent game. She was in charge of basically half of the court when the Longhorns were passing and generated quite a few transition plays with her digs. Steubing also did a very good job when she needed to set in transition and had a good serving run in the third set that brought the score close.
